Your first tattoo is a milestone, and it deserves better than a random design picked off a studio wall. After years of drawing pieces for first-timers, here is the advice I give every single one of them.
The pieces people regret are usually the ones that were decided in five minutes. The pieces they love forever tend to share two things: a subject that means something to them, and a design made for their body. A symbol that matters to you, drawn to flow with the shape of your arm or back, ages infinitely better than a generic stencil slapped on a flat spot.
The most common first-tattoo mistake is going too small. Detail needs room: a realistic portrait compressed into a 5 cm space will blur into mud in a few years. If your idea involves faces, lettering or fine detail, trust your artist when they tell you it needs to be bigger.
Forearm, shoulder, back and calf are all forgiving first placements. Think about how the piece will look with the rest of your body as your collection grows, not just today.
A first tattoo done with intention becomes a piece you show people. That is the whole idea behind the studio name: ink, done with intention.
